The Cincinnnati fire department (CFD) founded in 1853 is considered the first full time paid professional fire department in the nation..
Mr. Herbert S. Bane was the 1st African American Firefighter hired over 100 years later in 1955 on the CFD.
He faced tremendous turmoil and tension being the first African American hired by the CFD but was a source of pride and representation in the Avondale community he was from. After years of employment, he finally left the CFD. He later became a firefighter in the federal service, and he became one the highest-ranking black firefighters in the U.S. government service.
This history maker and legend passed away a few days ago at his residence in the Philippines. May God Rest his soul.
He was the first to pave a road many men and women gave their own lives for so that many can travel on that same road today! Salute to you and your family, Rest In Peace and thank you! You are the one we owe…
